Moisture  Associated  Skin  Damage  (MASD)  is  a  spectrum  of  inflammatory  damage  that  occurs  when  a  patient's  skin  has  prolonged  exposure  to  moisture  whether  it  is  sweat,  urine,  feces,  wound  exudate  or  other  bodily  secretions.  This  can  occur  across  the  lifespan  and  in  a  wide  range  of  patients.  Depending  on  where  the  moisture  occurs  medical  professionals  may  mistakenly  classify  this  as  a  pressure  injury.  Inappropriately  misclassifying  a  moisture  associated  wound  can  result  in  improper  treatment,  lack  of  reimbursement,  progression  of  the  wound,  and  inability  to  track  incidences  or  prevalence  of  MASD.

In  September  2011,  the  Wound  Ostomy  and  Continence  Nurses  Society  announced  that  their  application  for  new  ICD  10  codes  related  to  MASD  was  approved  by  the  ICD  10  Coordinator  and  Mainatenance  Committee.  The  new  codes  are  listed  as  Irritant  Contact  Dermatitis  and  allow  for  more  detailed  and  accurate  tracking  of  these  incidencse  and  prevalence  as  well  as  allowing  for  more  accurate  reimbursement  and  treatments.  Nurses  play  a  key  role  in  preventing  and  treating  Irritant  Contact  Dermatitis  and  pressure  injuries  when  they  occur  by  way  of  assessments,  interventions,  prevention  and  education  of  patients,  family  members  and  staff  on  the  course  of  action  and  treatments.

Home infusion therapy is becoming more common as the US healthcare system seeks to restrain costs without cutting patient safety. Reasons for home infusion therapy can include long term antibiotic therapy, hydration, or total parenteral nutrition. As a result, more nurses are taking care of patients in their home with vascular access devices including peripheral intravenous access (IVs), midline catheters and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC lines). Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling in the body's tissues, typically in the arms and legs, resulting from a blockage in the lymphatic system. This system is part of the immune and circulatory systems, responsible for draining lymph fluid from tissues, which can become blocked or damaged, leading to fluid buildup. There are two types: primary lymphedema (caused by problems with the development of lymph vessels) and secondary lymphedema (caused by damage to the lymphatic system). Common causes of secondary lymphedema include cancer treatment, infection, or injury. While there's no cure for lymphedema, it can be managed with early diagnosis and diligent care of affected limbs.
